Lukas Moodysson's new film to Venice

The film will have its world premiere at the celebrated film festival.

After four years, Lukas Moodysson is back.

His new film "We are the best!" Will have its world premiere at this year's film festival in Venice.
It is four years since one of the nation's most acclaimed directors made his last film. His international film "Mammoth" with Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal never became the international success many had hoped or perhaps expected. After the three films ”Fucking Åmål” (1998), ”Tillsammans” (2000) and ”Lilja 4-ever” (2002) it was predicted the Swede would become one of the leading directors in Europe.

Both "Together" and "Lilya 4-ever" were also shown at the Venice festival.
Lukas Moodysson's new film will have its world premiere when it appears in Orrizonti, one of the two competition sections.

- I am very happy and very surprised, he says in a press release.

The festival runs from August 28 to September 7. Shortly after Venice, the film even goes to the Film Festival in Toronto. The story of three 13 year old girls that go around in Stockholm takes place in 1982. The dream of starting a punk band, even though they all say that punk is dead. Starring Mira Birkhammar, Mira Grosin and Liv LeMoyne.
The film will premiere in Sweden on October 11th.

Two other Swedish films are also shown at the film festival. In the section Venezia Classici will be shown “Trespassing Bergman," feature film version of the TV series "Bergman's video" that was shown on SVT. It is made by Jane Magnusson and Hynek Pallas. It was previously known that the controversial artist Anna Odell's debut film ”Återträffen”("reunion") will be shown in the side section Critics Week.

- Three films in Venice is incredibly gratifying, and the selection is particularly gratifying in view of Venice's 70th anniversary. Here, Ingmar Bergman, one of the 1900s biggest names in the film, and two contemporary film artists: Lukas Moodysson, one of today's true greats, and Anna Odell as this begins its acquisitions in the film, says Anna Serner, Swedish Film Institute's CEO.

Nice, thanks Snaps. :)

Great to finally get a premiere date, and to hear it got in to prestigeous film festivals.
This sounds promising, and the trailer looked good as well.

Just hope it gets picked out for our theaters, so i don't have to wait for the dvd.

Vi är bäst premiered in Norway yesterday.
Had a look at various reviews, they seem a bit disappointed, rating it "middle-of-the-road" with 3's and 4's out of 6.

Most of them agreed on that the part dragging the ratings down was a weak storyline, not enough content, while they praise the feel and authenticity of the film.

My thoughts are that it's half the point of Moodysson to emphasize the portrayal of these young outsiders in 1980's Stockholm, rather then focus too much on the actuall story.

The similaritys with Fuckig Åmål is obvious (although without the romance), and the story wasn't really what made it a excellent feature.
I mean; outsider fall in love with the popular girl, a spark ignites, a struggle back and forth and eventually they end up together.
Not exactly new and original storywise, it's the delivery that counts, the heartfelt realism with engaging chemestry and atmosphere. 8)
My guess is that the same goes for Vi är best.

Anyway, I plan to go see Vi är bäst someday next week, looking forward to it. :D

I found the same thing with Mammut which I thoroughly enjoyed.
It was like life, no big heroic finish, just part of a story continuing into the future.

I hope you enjoy it.
I'll certainly be buying the dvd as soon as I can. *:)*

Alright, so I just got back from the cinema.

Bought a ticket, went inside and sat down, all alone.
And when I say all alone, I reallllly mean it.
I had the entire cinema hall for myself.
Never experienced that before, even on unpopular films or "arthouse films" theres at least a half dusin.
A cinema employee came in before it started and asked me if I wanted with or without subtitles.

Anyway, the film was very good indeed, I'll gladly recommend it.
It wasn't exactly as good as Moodyson's best (Fucking Åmål and Tilsammans), but quite charming and enjoyable.
And the girls were superb, Lukas is truly an expert in bringing out great performances in young inexperienced actors.

Glad you enjoyed it, dahls.

I tend to go to the cinema in an afternoon, and have occasionally had the whole theatre to myself. It's a rare pleasure. :D
