"Show Me Lovers Reunite
by Phil on February 15, 2010
In 1998, teenage Swedish actresses Alexandra Dahlstrom and Rebecka Liljeberg, then fourteen and seventeen respectively, became superstars in their homeland for their performances as two schoolgirls falling in love in “Fucking Amal” (retitled “Show Me Love” for more prudish Western audiences).
The film, which out-grossed “Titanic” in Sweden, has become a cult classic for film lovers the world over and remains a cultural touchstone in its homeland, a fact which was reinforced by an unexpected reunion between the stars of the film earlier this month. Alexandra Dahlstrom, now twenty six, has continued to pursue both an acting and directing career – her most recent picture being Swedish comedy “Manana”, released there last year – while Liljeberg (now 28) after a couple of other movies such as family adventure “Sherdil” (also 1998) and the bizarre fairytale “Bear’s Kiss” (2001), retired from acting to pursue a career as a pediatrician and raise a family, and had not made a public appearance since a spot on a late night Swedish talk show in 2004 – until now.
On the first of February, at the country’s annual Gay Festival, “Fucking Amal” was again honoured for its impact on audiences and positive representation of homosexuals, and in a most unexpected development, both Alexandra Dahlstrom and Rebecka Liljeberg, reunited for the first time since 1999, dropped by to pick up the award, express gratitude that the story of the film was still touching audiences, and even drink a celebratory toast (of the Swedish chocolate milk drink “O’Boy”, as their characters were last seen sharing in the final scene of the film). Whether Liljeberg’s appearance indicates she may be considering a return to show-business after completion of her pediatric studies, or it will remain a one-off, the moment was nonetheless a joyously nostalgic reminder for fans of the enduring power of this iconic cult film."
Is this Ian using the nom de plume "Phil"?
No wonder he gets the big bucks.
