A new start for a new year!
Doctor Who - The Empty Child. In the midst of the London Blitz, a little boy in a gas mask is wandering the streets, calling for his mummy. And anyone that touches him will end up in the same exact condition. What the hell is going on? And can the Doctor stop it before the whole of humanity ends up a horde of shambling, gasmasked zombies all calling for their mummy?
All I can say is - WOW.
The Empty Child is a masterpiece. Gorgeously shot, brilliantly written and acted (Eccleston on blistering form, Rose reminding us why we used to like her, and the very yummy Florence Hoath
) Everything from the WWII period setting (and indeed, the nighttime setting too, all adding to the wonderful atmosphere) to the stunningly cinematic design and direction... it's as close to flawless as you can get.
The Empty Child is the one NuHu story labelled an "all time classic" that really does deserve the accolade. I don't think they've ever equalled, let alone beaten it, since. Why can't they all be this good? Fantastic. You really haven't lived until you've seen Victor Meldrew from One Foot in the Grave call for his mummy while his face bulges and twists as a gas mask grows out of his flesh!
