What Are You Currently Watching (on tv/dvd)?

Postby Ian » Sun Jan 02, 2011 12:59 am

A new start for a new year!

Doctor Who - The Empty Child. In the midst of the London Blitz, a little boy in a gas mask is wandering the streets, calling for his mummy. And anyone that touches him will end up in the same exact condition. What the hell is going on? And can the Doctor stop it before the whole of humanity ends up a horde of shambling, gasmasked zombies all calling for their mummy?

All I can say is - WOW.

The Empty Child is a masterpiece. Gorgeously shot, brilliantly written and acted (Eccleston on blistering form, Rose reminding us why we used to like her, and the very yummy Florence Hoath :)P ) Everything from the WWII period setting (and indeed, the nighttime setting too, all adding to the wonderful atmosphere) to the stunningly cinematic design and direction... it's as close to flawless as you can get.

The Empty Child is the one NuHu story labelled an "all time classic" that really does deserve the accolade. I don't think they've ever equalled, let alone beaten it, since. Why can't they all be this good? Fantastic. You really haven't lived until you've seen Victor Meldrew from One Foot in the Grave call for his mummy while his face bulges and twists as a gas mask grows out of his flesh!

Doctor Who - The War Games (Episodes 1-5). This epic 10 parter sees out the Patrick Troughton era, the 1960s and black and white Who in general. The Doctor and co arrive in No Man's Land on the Western Front, 1917. Picked up by British troops, they are taken back to their HQ, where the inexplicably malevolent General Smythe accuses them of being spies and traitors. Found guilty in a ludicrous "court martial", the Doctor is sentenced to death by firing squad. But all is not as it seems. Many of the men cannot seem to remember how long they have been fighting, or even how they got to their current post, and hidden behind a painting in the sinister Smythe's office is a very un1917 video communications device... A rollicking good action adventure, SF mystery and anti-war tale (war depicted as a game run for the benefit of the elite, with the common soldier unaware of what and why he is really fighting. There's even a brilliantly callous scene where the "British" and "German" Generals discuss troop movements and how many men they'll let die in their next encounter). Classic stuff.

Sounds like a cross between the film "Oh, What A Lovely War", and the episode of Red Dwarf where Rimmer takes command of Queen Victoria, Laurel and Hardy, and other "good guys, and declares war on Hitler, Caligula and other bad guys of history. Lots of fun.

Doctor Who - The War Games (Pts 5-10). Terrific conclusion. The final episode, which explains the Doctor's origins and introduces the Time Lords for the very first time, and then proceeds to wipe out all three of the regular cast in one fell swoop, is still a heartbreaker 42 years on.

Doctor Who - Inferno. The Doctor and UNIT are attached to a massive drilling project to bore into the Earth's crust and release "a vast new source of energy". Unfortunately, things are already going wrong, as a viscous substance begins to leak from the pipes and a technician who touches it becomes a snarling, crazed madman. When an accident flings the Doctor sideways into a fascistic parallel world where the drilling is several stages ahead, he gets to experience first hand just what a threat this project really is - to everyone on Earth. This epic, apocalyptic 7 parter begins with an atmosphere of unease and growing dread and steadily ramps up the tension to almost unbearable levels. Superbly acted, with strong direction, the stark industrial landscape adding to the atmosphere, this is one of the all time great Who stories. Oh, and the bizarre, bestial noises made by the infected humans is perhaps THE creepiest sound effect in the show's history. Brilliant.

Don't think I could put up with that background music for all 7 episodes.
Hope it was just in the trailer. :T

Good to see Jon Pertwee again though. :D

Seen a couple of eps of Fringe on Go lately. Seems quite good, though rather complicated (its in season 3 I believe) so I rented season 1 today and will marathon it over this week!
