Just taught I start a thread on what everyone's best ten lesbian films you ever seen :)

1. Fucking Amal- Still the best film on Lesbians that doesn't treat it as some pervy subject also on Teenage lives plus the best couple on screen in Alexandra and Rebecka. 14 years on still top of the list 10/10

2.All Over me- Its a film that gets largely ingored. its not perfect but it has a central romance that rivals Elin and Anges as the best lesbian couple Alison Folland and the L word Leisha Hailer. The Scene where they flirt over a Patti smith is as romantic as anything you see. Not Enough of those scenes between the two but well worth a look. 7/10

3.Cracks- A very good film on Obession with Eva Green (casino royale) as a school teacher in a all girl school falling for the new female student as her other students get jealous. Doesn't end well but a brillant film 8/10

4.The Kids are alright- A great film that really works thanks to Annette Benning and Julianne moore as the Lesbian Couple going through midlife crisis. 8/10

5. With Every Heartbeat-Its not perfect but the central performances and first hour plus ending gets this film in the top 10.A artier Imagine me and you and better for it 7/10

6. Room in Rome- Yes its got a ton of naked girls having sex but its very heartfelt and romantic too 7/10

7.Aimee and Jaguer- Very long and boring at times but still a good film with great performances about Lesbians during WW2 7/10

8. Bound- awesome film that would have worked without a Lesbian couple but gina gershon is great 8/10

9. But i'm a Cheerleader- a little bit OTT at times but the central romance is cute and really brings this film along 7/10

10.My summer of love- great film maybe not so much a Lesbian film but more about Obession and control 7/10

I can only really think of 3 - FA (top, of course), Water Lilies and the silly but fun DEBS. Of the ones you mentioned, Bound and Room in Rome are okay but not favourites of mine, I didn't really like MSOL or BIAC and I haven't seen the others. Hopefully there'll be another to add to the list with Kiss Me.

Well, Doctor, strangely enough, I'm not actually into lesbian movies per se, it's just...it all started with Let The Right One In...I've always been painfully homophobic, but that one really got under my skin; the talent and beauty of the kid leads, of the whole thing. [Yes, I know it's not a lesbo movie, hear me out.]

Then there was an authoritarian coup d'etat at the LTROI fan site, and anyway snapsie had introduced me to FA/SML, which was completely charming and equally as unthreatening to my pathetic phobias. Also, she kept going on about a Water Lilies/Naissance des Pieuvres, and when I finally saw it I understood why...Pauline Acquart is the female version of me at 15 [though I'd guess many feel like that, such was the genius of her performance and the film].

Then I took a chance on the Theron/Ricci film Monster, the Aileen Wuornos biopic, which basically killed me and sent me to Hell.

So there you have it, one homo [gasp! Eli is a BOY!?] and three lesbo films all in a row, and at least two of them causing earthquakes and major obsession. You'd think life was trying to tell you something, too!

Am I normal, Doc? Is normal even good enough?

That's a very nice thing to say, Ian, thanks. It was a pretty disgraceful business all round, really, I was quite surprised how much it affected me.

Eli was played by a girl though, and certainly comes across more as a girl than a boy in the film

Let's be honest here, lesbian couples or lesbian films are not in any way controversial like the male equivalent

And lesbian softcore films have been around since the 1970s, and being very popular among mainstream audiences in many countries.

Actually Sweden produced a lot of softcore films in the 70s that had a fair share of lesbian erotica.

To regard Fucking Åmål as something groundbreaking in this field, even if it was a regular film and not an erotic film, is rather stupid.

I'd have to disagree there Magnus. There is a pretty large world of difference between soft core lesbian erotica designed for male titillation and a mainstream romantic comedy drama which treats "lesbians" as real people with real emotions and not just lust objects. The fact that such a film was such a massive success with mainstream audiences in its own country and popular and loved enough to make an impact on audiences overseas despite the obvious foreign language difficulty also makes it pretty damn groundbreaking in my view. I certainly can't think of anything before it that did the same thing, can you?

Name one.:W

Fucking Åmål is a unique film in many ways, I just mean the lesbian theme was not exactly groundbreaking, and wasn't treated as such in Sweden either.

Maybe it was viewed more as a taboo-breaking film in some other markets abroad, which is rather silly if it was.

If Agnes and Elin hadn't been as cute and appealing perhaps it would have been more a "real" lesbian film too

Agnes and Elin are more like bi-sexual hotties really.

Here you have some real life hard-core dykes

in Sweden it is possible that lesbian theme was nothing new, but good for us, yes. When I wonder that the FA is actually very simple film. Theme, plot, just the whole story to my mind the idea of why something like this at the time (90's) not made in our country or in other countries-Europe. What the hell ....they waiting to somebody so bold as Sweden which break this taboo and go as the first skin in the game? I think so, otherwise it nedovadu explain. Because a lot of comments, not only to the FA, but for other lesbian films are in the form of something like this: It's already been a million times / nothing special / nothing new / slightly aroun theme, etc. But no one realize that just before the FA was not anything that this theme so stripped and made popular by, or at least questionable. Yes, certainly there were movies before the FA, but those do not become just as significant. As for real lesbians, you chose Magnus really extreme steam. It's not perhaps from America? Because many lesbian couples looks normal and it is interesting that this is increasingly often a number of young people. It is true that if would not played the role Bex with Alex so that many people dislike so much, they have awesome chemistry between them even separately are simply magical. It is true that a lot of real young lesbians is not so attractive, but exist like that.

Maybe some eastern european countries were more conservative, and this lesbian theme was something completely new to you.

Have there been any lesbian theme in Czech films after Fucking Åmål?

Here you have a very early lesbian film Therese and Isabelle from 1968, by Radley Metzger.
