I still watch it occasionally, on a strictly-rationed 'don't wear it out' basis, and it's holding up very well. Amazing how much l'Acquart had changed by the next thing, Au 7eme Jour, a scant year later; a good six inches taller, fleshed out from the skinny gamine Marie, but still instantly recognisable; extraordinaire like la Gainsbourg.

Nice.

Any idea what festival this was?
Not Cannes for sure.
Maybe Cabourg?

Whatever it is they look exhausted poor loves. :Z :Z :Z :Z

Marie has no idea how beautiful she is

When I was young and beautiful, I thought I was hideous and geeky and that no-one could possibly find me attractive. I suspect this is a fairly common teenage preoccupation, but that doesn't make it any more fun.

Anyway, one of the reasons l'Acquart's Marie gets to me is that she radiates this, in spades - [eg "I don't know why I'm arsed, I'm not normal anyway" ], and she is patently [and painfully] shy about her tiny, budding breasts as contrasted with Floriane's. However there's also a certain interesting defiance, anger and determination; when she does take action or break her silence, she's unexpectedly forceful...but she has no clue how beautiful she is.

How different the character would be if, like Floriane, she had always ticked the boxes of conventional beauty, and been constantly admired and lusted after?

For some reason I'm sure she would hate it.

So would I.
That awkwardness and insecurity just adds to Marie's charm, and Pauline totally inhabits the character. *:)*

Nice find, O Fish! *:)*

I particularly liked that Céline says they still hang out, and that she feels 'responsible' for them; the complete opposite of the cynical, exploitative 'industry' mindset. After all, the film must have been a signal event in all their lives, and this is no small thing.

It's good to know that, despite the wrong-headed pontifications of many so-called 'reviewers' who really ought to have known better, the film achieved its goal of cutting through to the realities of young feminine experience, without resorting to brutality, voyeurism or 'the fantasy of cotton underwear'...and I liked the smile .gif very much anyway, just as a smile, but in context ["You really get to feel, and experiment...what it's like to be a girl"] it's even more charming.

Go Sciamma... 8)
