I may have beaten a machine.

My DVD player/recorder has been acting up lately, freezing at random points in a dvd, especially those with more than a couple of hours on them, and occasionally making a loud whirring/grinding sound. Never a good noise to hear.

So I figured the warranty must have just run out, I'd better buy another one.

Rather than splash out lots of money I went to the sales and bought a cheap Sony player for around $60, hooked it up to the tv as a "component" and tested it out. Worked like a charm. Already an all region player so I didn't have to mess around there. So now both the new player and my old player/recorder can be used without any messing around with wires.

After a couple of days I found out that the original one must have been feeling very threatened because when I tried it again it behaved perfectly, and has ever since.

Fish 1....Machine 0.

LOL

I think it may be overuse. I had a similar problem about 5 years back with my original dvd player. It was starting to get very ratty, freezing up etc all the time. I wanted a multi region anyway, so I bought a new one. Once I started alternating between them on various nights, it stopped doing it. Still use it now with no problems, and it'll be 10 years old this year! *:)*

Of course, there's also the "some discs refuse to work on some players, even when they work perfectly fine on others", but that's probably a different issue altogether.

So what you're saying is that it might only be half-time?

LOL Probably!

You may win the occasional battle with technology, my friend, but you can never win the war.

The criss crossing of actors on old Aussie soaps. In the last few weeks of watching the old Sons and Daughters and Home and Away, I've seen Sgt. Bob Barnett from H&A turn up (as a cop, talk about typecast) on S&D, Original Pippa from H&A was in earlier this week, and this morning bloody Barlow, who's currently terrorising his wife and daughter on old H&A, was on S&D as a typically thuggish picketer!

I think there were only about 10 actors in Australia in the 80s!

Must have been a limited gene pool of talent in the 80's.
I was never a great soap fan, they all seemed the same to me. Maybe it was because the same actors kept turning up all the time. I was of the opinion that much of the better talent wound up going to the bigger markets in the UK and US.

It's only since reading about them here that I seem to be regenerating into someome with more appreciation for them.

I could have kicked the b***h to the other side of the universe last night if someone - cough, splutter - would give me the power to ban people (hint, hint, cough, splutter).

I'm currently working as a script/dialogue editor on a potential US feature film.

No, I don't believe it either, frankly. :!: :?:
