Fish, that girlfriend that I told you about, only has one sister who lives in New Zealand.
He says that no language is taught in schools until the institute offered by French, German or Chinese.

Non-English languages are taught in Primary schools and in the first couple of years in Secondary schools.
After that they become optional courses.

Australia is very much a nation of immigrants and the trend is for kids to learn the language of their parents as well as English.
Generally each school initiates its own choice of language depending on the ethnic make up of the area's school age population.
Not unusual for schools to teach a choice of Italian, Mandarin or Indonesian as the most popular languages, simply because of the background of the students.
