Depends of what kind of russian you're talkin about... On the streets it's enough to know some bad language and do some spitting, give cigarettes or say 'ja ne kurju'. But when it comes to communicating and writing it's a little bit more complex.
The depressing majority of the mainstream rus muz really isn't my cup of tea.

Lately I've started to listen to a band Delerium...don't know too many songs but it's quite nice band...not my story (not too much rock stuff)...but sounds really good. ;)
