Favourite TV Shows?

Postby Ian » Fri Nov 07, 2008 1:45 am

We've got a favourite films thread going off on in that section, so I thought I'd start one for tv, since I've probably got more favourite tv shows than movies, in truth. (There's really only a handful of movies that mean that much to me. Yes, you know what one of them is  )

So... er... a top 10.

1 Doctor Who
2 Twin Peaks
3 Press Gang
4 Buffy
5 Soap
6 Blackadder
7 Drop the Dead Donkey (British newsroom comedy, for anyone wondering  )
8 Newsradio
9 Seinfeld
10 Neighbours (early years) (I almost hesitate to include it, since there are others that are far better shows in themselves. They didn't have Amelia Frid in, though, so boo shucks for them  )

Anyone else? Or am I the sole telly lover? :P

Hmm, new shows I'm watching lately are:

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
30 Rock
Pushing Daisies
Supernatural
Gossip Girl
The Office (US)

Also sports and some reruns (like Dead Like Me in HD) but I don't really watch that much TV.

Oh, I loved Dead Like Me too. Great, quirky show. Lost is very good as well. :)

I could probably end up listing a top 30 or something...

You people really need to watch more tv.

There's some fantastic shows out there. A lot of complete dross as well, of course, but then you can say the same for movies (or indeed, anything!) :P

I am not a TV show person (not out of principle, it just happens I don't watch many of them). But I just discovered a truly amazing thing - the funny thing is that I am very sure that I got the idea of renting it literally years ago when I discovered the name of the show on some website related to FA. It was difficult getting it because it obviously ran only once on German TV in the late nineties, and I had never heard of it. Apparently it is considered a neglected classic in the US, even though it wasn't commcercially successful. I am talking about MY SO-CALLED LIFE, starring Claire Danes, who was 15 years old at the time and is incredibly powerful. I have only watched the first two episodes till now, but especially Danes's performance in the first episode gave me one of those very rare Liljeberg-moments. (There are some scenes shot in a school, where Danes moves through a crowd of people like an alien - it's impossible for anyone acquainted with FA not to draw comparisons). The show seems to have an established cult following too.
Has anybody else seen and liked it?

I've got the boxset, but I've only watched like two episodes. I thought the first ep was very good, but wasn't so keen on the second.

I should probably get round to watching the rest!

Yeah, I think you should! I just finished eipsode 4 and I'm quite determined to keep watching. I mean, you're gonna jump at me afterwards anyway, telling me that Danes is no Rebecka   ! Which she isn't, but certainly this is one of the best teenage acting performances I've ever seen. And the script and characters are really amazingly good. It boasts lots of dialogues that are like those between Agnes and Pappa Olof, for example.

Well, to be fair, nobody's Rebecka. Except that Amelia girl.

Heya all, lovely thing to pass the time. In some of my fandoms we always get to cite some favorites.

I like Dexter, Bones, House, Mad Men, and Weeds. Those were all American shows. At home, the shows bore me. So I always tune online to find the most interesting shows there are.

Hey, can you guys suggest some of the best European shows? I mean, I know Rebecca and Alexandra were in some of it and silly me never got to see it. Tee hee.

And why on Earth did I leave out Angel, X-Files, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer?! Silly me. :D

I don't know many European shows, sorry. Rebecka guest-starred in the swedish teen series Eva and Adam, can be seen as a very little girl in the 1991 series Sunes Jul, and in Skargordsdoktorn. She also had a one-episode guest spot on hospital show OP. You can find links to clips of these on this site (or just look on Youtube!)

I think Alex was in another hospital show, though the name escapes me at the moment!
