Swedish movies/television

Postby Ian » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:36 am

So what other Swedish movies/television series are there? (Particularly ones that are any good).

I'm interested in Sweden these days for some reason! Maybe it's the accents. Or the cute girls. But I find it rather fascinating now, I even joined a free online 'learn Swedish' site a month or so back. Bit hard, mind! :P

Any recommendations/suggestions/insights?

Skärgårdsdoktorn is a nice TV series you know about already Ian, pity it doesn't have subs on the dvd

You want to know about stuff you could actually get hold of, and that has subs?

Of course Sweden is famous for the intellectual movies by Ingmar Bergman

Well, the subtitled stuff would be nice. :D But even if it's not (or not available). I'm just kinda interested, for some reason! It seems like an interesting place...

Though some found it cheesy, I actually liked Kay Pollak's "As In Heaven" (Så som i himmelen) from 2004, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Picture.

Also good: Reza Bagher's "Popular Music" (Populärmusik från Vittula) from 2004. Even older, but very witty and funny: Josef Fares's "Jalla Jalla" from 2000, which according to IMDB was released in Australia under the title "The Best Man's Wedding".

And, while we're at it, the Bergman movies might be intellectual (and there's nothing wrong with that by the way  ), but they are also really, really, really GOOD. Plus, they tend to always have fantastic actresses in them. Go see "Smultronstället" (international title "Wild Strawberries") from 1957, half a century old now, with a young Bibi Andersson, and try NOT picturing her as an early incarnation of Alexandra Dahlström. I dare say it's impossible!

Thanks for that, Dave. I've thought about the Bergmans, I just wasn't sure if they'd really be my cup of tea, but I might see if I can't pick one up sometime.

Speaking of old movies......
Babette's Feast is one that I particularly like, and which pops up from time to time on SBS here in Oz. (not in the last 7 or 8 years though)

Bergman I find to be a bit like Moodysson. Some stuff just a bit hard to deal with and the rest Brilliant.

Two really good classic Swedish films are The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972) by Jan Troell, they're about a group of Swedes emigrating to America around 1850. Don't know if these films are available with subs, but I'd definitely recommend them!

The film and TV versions of the childrens-books by Astrid Lindgren are usually fun and well made, even though they're mostly aimed at younger kids.

The problem once again is subs I guess

Recently found out there will be a movie based on the TV series Skärgårdsdoktorn!

They will shoot it in 2010 and Samuel Fröler and Ebba Hultqvist will once again play the leads.

The TV series ended in 2000 so it's exactly 10 years later they'll make this movie!

Looking forward to it :)

Then it should have been made last year

But maybe we can hope for a FÅ 15 Years On ?

Anyway this Skärgårdsdoktorn movie was unexpected, and Ebba Hultkvist who was only a teenage girl in the TV series will now be a young woman.

Exactly what would be the case with Alex and Rebecka in a new FÅ movie!

It would indeed be interesting to see Agnes and Elin as adults
