fish wrote:I'm afraid I need a tutorial on The Wayback Machine Snapsie. How do you get from finding the site to finding the pics?
I really don’t understand what the difficulty is
1) Simply right click on the addy, and open in a new window.
http://web.archive.org/web/20001001133059/http://hem.passagen.se/jaymz81/Fucking/index1.htm2) This opens out somethings like this ….
Internet Archive's Wayback Machine
Welcome to Wayback.
Loading...
http://hem.passagen.se/jaymz81/Fucking/index1.htmas close to the date:
13:30:59 Oct 1, 2000
as is available..
Impatient? The Wayback Machine is an initiative of the Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Other projects include Open Library, nasaimages.org & archive-it.org. Your use of the Wayback Machine is subject to the Internet Archive's Terms of Use.3) Then wait.
4) Or else click on the word:
Impatient? [because you are
]
5) This opens out the archived site.
6) [Optional] You can click to close the Wayback box if you wish.
7) On Peter’s Fucking Sida, for example got to the menu in the left hand bar and
Click on the word ‘Bilder’ (i.e. pictures) This opens out sample thumbnails and the following sub-menu.
Rebecca med i "Sherdil"9) But some of the thumbnails you can click on directly
and it will open out a full size version of the photo. E.g like the one of Bex doing embroidery
10) which you can save as a jpeg. If you wish.
11) Others like the one of Bex sitting at the table haven’t been archived
So it comes up with a message like this when you click on:
Internet Archive's Wayback Machine
LatestShow All
Hrm.
Wayback Machine doesn't have that page archived. It doesn't seem to be available on the live web, either.
Want to search for all archived pages under
http://hem1.passagen.se/chatte81/ ?
12) Then click on the link.
This will take you to a list headed something like this:
Internet Archive's Wayback Machine
Go Wayback!
33 URLs have been captured for this domain.
Filter results (i.e. '.txt'):

URL ↑ From To Captures Duplicates Uniques
hem1.passagen.se/chatte81/018rebeccaliten.jpg Nov 28, 2005 Nov 28, 2005 1 0 1
Etc etc
13) From there its pot luck.
If the original author has been smart the URL title will give you a clue as to content. Remember though that the saved titles are likely to be in the language of the author
So, for example
http://hem1.passagen.se/chatte81/alexprat.jpg isn’t a pic of Alex behaving like a prat
it means ‘prat’ in Swedish as in ‘talk’
Sometimes the picture will open up directly for you.
Othertimes it will come up with a message like:
http://hem1.passagen.se/chatte81/bild.jpg has been crawled 2 times going all the way back to March 8, 2004.
A crawl can be a duplicate of the last one. It happens about 25% of the time across 420,000,000 websites. FAQ
14) Scroll down the calendar
and you will see one of the dates has a light blue circle round it.
15) Hover your mouse over it and it will turn dark blue and come up with a reference.
16) Click on it. E.g. November 28th 2005.
If you are in luck it will open up the pic for you.
If it doesn’t, it may be worth going back and ....
17) clicking on the earlier date, as the image may have been deleted between ‘crawls’ by the search engines.
Sadly in this case, the photo of Bex at the table hasn’t been archived
so there isn’t much you can do about it
but there are lots of other pics dating from the book-signing period.
It just requires oodles of patience and detective work.
You could always go back to the original list on Peter’s bilder page:
18) Click on
Bilder jag fått av Klubba opens a new subpage
Nya bilder från Klubba!Which has 18 further references you can click on.
Some, (most in this case) will open out directly
others (like number 2) will take you back into the Wayback machine to try to hunt down from a list, as above.
OK you may not get much further than TN’s at this point but check out the list ‘stor’ for example means ‘big’ as in larger images.
For this example, Peter has linked directly to ‘Big Macs’ website, which as it not functional/ archived only can’t display directly.
19) It will then take you to ‘Big Macs’ archive of canit.se/bigmac on Wayback and you can start the process all over again. [12-17]
Guaranteed, hours of endless fun!
Just consider yourself as like an explorer, you may be the first person to have set eyes on a rare pic in years.
20) Alternatively, you can get a life instead.
