It should be remembered that a portion of the convict population were malnourished children from English slums, trying to stay alive by stealing to buy food.
No "giants" among that lot.
No sympathy for their age, they were usually sentenced to 7 years "transportation" to Australia.
"Transportation" only lasted from 1788 to 1868.
But even that isn't the whole story.
The largest population intake was from non-convict Europeans escaping poverty and/or religious persecution.
There are still significant numbers migrating to Australia today, mainly from Europe, Africa and Asia.
My own ancestors migrated from Germany in the mid 1800's.
