Though some found it cheesy, I actually liked Kay Pollak's "As In Heaven" (Så som i himmelen) from 2004, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Picture.
Also good: Reza Bagher's "Popular Music" (Populärmusik från Vittula) from 2004. Even older, but very witty and funny: Josef Fares's "Jalla Jalla" from 2000, which according to IMDB was released in Australia under the title "The Best Man's Wedding".
And, while we're at it, the Bergman movies might be intellectual (and there's nothing wrong with that by the way
), but they are also really, really, really GOOD. Plus, they tend to always have fantastic actresses in them. Go see "Smultronstället" (international title "Wild Strawberries") from 1957, half a century old now, with a young Bibi Andersson, and try NOT picturing her as an early incarnation of Alexandra Dahlström. I dare say it's impossible!
